Combine the beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic, breadcrumbs, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and shape into four oval patties.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Fry the patties for 5 to 6 minutes on each side until they achieve a deep brown color. Transfer to a plate.
In the same skillet, add the onion and mushrooms.
Sauté for about 7 to 9 minutes until the moisture evaporates and they are nicely seared. Transfer these to the plate with the patties.
Reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter in the skillet.
Sprinkle in the flour, stirring continuously for 1 to 2 minutes until a roux forms.
Completing the Gravy
Gradually whisk in the beef broth ensuring there are no lumps.
Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder for extra flavor.
Simmering Everything Together
Return the onions, mushrooms, and patties to the skillet.
Let everything cook together for 5 to 7 minutes until the patties are cooked through and the sauce thickens. If needed, add a splash of water or broth to adjust consistency.
Serve the Salisbury Steak immediately with a sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste.
Notes
Make sure to combine the ingredients gently to avoid dense patties.
Use fresh garlic for a more robust flavor.
If your gravy becomes too thick, whisk in a small amount of additional beef broth or water to reach your desired texture.
Pair these patties with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up every bit of the delicious gravy.
